Alternative Pattern Making at Lindblom Math and Sciences Academy with The Arts of Life!
Since we used graph paper last week to develop some patterns this week we decided to figure out what ELSE could be used to make patterns!
We used out hands, feet (socks and no socks PU!), staplers, tape dispensers and anything else that we found could make an interesting shape!
This lesson developed awareness of natural lines from unlikely sources. It was an active lesson that incorporated math, art and giggles! We learned the basics of discovery and again counting!
Thanks to Liz (volunteer at The Arts of Life) and Kris (artist at The Arts of Life) for all your help!

GRAPH PAPER PATTERNS WITH THE ARTS OF LIFE AND LINDBLOM MATH AND SCIENCES ACADEMY
We’re back from SPRING BREAK! Everyone was energized and ready to make some art! This week we worked on designing patterns using graph paper. We learned that going out of the lines and making mistakes are actually happy accidents and can result in some really beautiful images.
The basis for this lesson was very simple; define a space and fill it with a repetition of color, line, and shape to make what is called Pattern.
Students worked with rulers and worked on their counting skills to make patterns such as stripes and checks.
We learned there are truly an infinite number of patterns that can be created by simply repeating lines in different lengths and directions, varying their spacing and rotating their position on the page.
Thanks to Frances (Arts of Life artist) and Liz (Arts of Life Volunteer) for helping the students make some gorgeous designs.
